African Painted Dogs
African Painted Dogs
The endangered painted dog (Lycaon pictus), also known as painted wolf, African wild dog, and African hunting dog, are native to Africa and are not found in the wild elsewhere on the planet. These beautiful, fascinating social animals occur in isolated pockets across the continent in a handful of countries, including Botswana. There is an estimated 6,600 left in the wild, of which approximately 1,500 occur in Botswana.
Keller works in collaboration with the University of Botswana conducting pioneering research on this unique species. Keller monitors two packs of painted dogs in the Okavango region, in collaboration with Peter, a researcher for the University of Botswana who works with local populations of humans and dogs, through conservation education and public outreach, to ensure their long-term survival and to hopefully to allow both humans and painted dogs to thrive in this region.
Adopt a Painted Dog
The primary pack that Keller is monitoring in the Mababe area of the Okavango Delta currently has 19 adults, with a new litter of 11 puppies. Of the 19 adults, seven are 1 year old, and four are 2 years old, while the others are fully grown adults. Seven of the pups born in 2025 survived, and four of the pups from 2024 survived.
When you donate $100 per year to symbolically adopt a painted dog, you will receive personalized updates and photos of the painted dogs that Keller is monitoring, including the number of puppies, their prey, interactions with other species such as lions and hyenas, and other fun facts. Your contribution will further the conservation of this species

The Okavango Research Institute (ORI), part of the University of Botswana, conducts critical research on the endangered painted dog (Lycaon pictus) in the Okavango Delta. Their studies primarily focus on population dynamics, disease vulnerability, and how human-wildlife conflict impacts these highly social predators. University of Botswana researchers, working alongside the Botswana Predator Conservation (BPC) and Wild Entrust, conduct leading research on African Painted Dogs. Focus areas include mapping dispersal patterns, tracking climate change impacts on pack behaviors, and testing the "Bioboundary Project" to mitigate human-wildlife conflict.
Research
Research on African Painted Dogs in Botswana covers several critical scientific and conservation themes:
- Bioboundary Project: Pioneered by Dr. J.W. McNutt, this initiative explores using synthetic scent-marking to chemically map territories, acting as non-lethal "biological fences" to keep dogs away from human settlements and farmlands.
- Behavioral Ecology and Demographics: Collaborative studies (including work with the University of Zurich) monitor demographic processes and dispersal patterns using camera traps and GPS/satellite collars.
- Climate Change and Hunting: Joint studies by the University of Washington utilize on-animal video sensors and AI to understand how changing temperatures impact pack hunting and feeding habits.
- Nutritional Adaptations: Recent field observations show that painted dogs occasionally break strict carnivore rules to supplement their diets by foraging on wild fruits (such as the jackalberry).
Other conservation programs
The Botswana Predator Conservation Trust (BPCT), a program of WILD ENTRUST, has studied African painted dogs since 1989. Based in the Okavango Delta, their research tracks pack dynamics, dispersal patterns, and pioneering "BioBoundary" scent deterrents to safely mitigate human-wildlife conflict.
The Painted Wolf Foundation (PWF) is a registered non-profit conservation organization dedicated to protecting the highly endangered painted wolf. Founded in 2018 by Nicholas Dyer, Peter Blinston, and the late Diane Skinner, the foundation aims to reverse the downward population trajectory of Africa's most persecuted predator. Its ultimate goal is to double the global population of painted wolves by the year 2055. The foundation manages the PWF Painted Wolf Conservation Leadership Programme to train and empower local African conservationists. In partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Network (WCN), the PWF manages the Painted Dog Fund. This specialized granting mechanism pools donor contributions and transfers 100% of those funds directly to high-impact, verified field projects across Africa. The foundation oversees strategy, monitors grant performance, and ensures investments are channeled into "Best Practice" conservation interventions.
